Daughter of Rudy Giuliani Gets Arrested For Shoplifting. Caroline Still Angry With Daddy?

Caroline Giuliani (Hanover) , daughter of New York City’s ex-mayor and one-time presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani has been arrested for shoplifting cosmetics from a store near the East Side of Manhattan home she shares with her mother, ex-newscaster Donna Hanover.

Rudy Giuliani and Donna Hanover finally divorced in 2002 after a bitter separation. Rudy announced at a press conference on May 1, 2000 (without informing Hanover) he was separating from Hanover and seeking a divorce, mentioning he was involved with another woman, Judith Nathan, who was on his staff. To insiders, and especially Donna Hanover, it wasn’t a new revelation. The affair had been going on for years and began sometime after the marriage between Giuliani and Hanover began to have problems starting in 1996.

Donna Hanover, obviously upset, seemed intent on driving the wedge down further between Giuliani and his children, Caroline and Andrew, that Giuliani put in place with his actions. Divorce of parents isn’t easy and Hanover seemed intent on not keeping her anger from spilling over onto their children. Giuliani argued in a court case that he aimed to introduce Nathan to his children on Father’s Day, 2001, and that Hanover had prevented this visit. Giuliani and Hanover finally settled their acrimonious divorce case in July 2002, after his mayoralty had ended, with Giuliani paying Hanover a $6.8 million settlement and granting her custody of their children.

By March 2007, The New York Times and the New York Daily News reported that Giuliani had become estranged from both his son Andrew and his daughter Caroline, missing major events in their lives, such as graduations, and sometimes going long stretches without talking to them, and that neither of them was taking part in his presidential campaign. Though, it seems Rudy Giuliani has tried on at least one occasion to show his support without being confrontational, when he took a last seat balcony position away from other family members seated in the front rows at Caroline's high school graduation, slipping in before the proceedings and leaving as soon as they concluded. Caroline snubbed her father in statements to the press after her graduation. "This is a great day," she told the Daily News. "I am celebrating with my mom, my stepfather [Ed Oster], my brother and other family friends."

Caroline uses her mother's surname, Hanover, rather than Giuliani's, and according to reports, she did not inform Giuliani when she was accepted to Harvard.

Almost 3 years to the day before her latest embarrassing episode of shoplifting, she also linked her personal Facebook page for a while to a page related to the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama, when her father was seeking the Republican nomination.

In her recent arrest, pictures taken of Caroline Giuliani were described as her having a smirk on her face. She was held only a short time by police. Charges have yet to be filed, but police sources told ABC News that she is expected to be charged with petit larceny. She will be required to appear before a judge at a later date, sources said.

While it seems Rudy's son Andrew and him have reconciled, Caroline seems to have some deeper issues with her father that her intelligence can't seem to deal with, now that she has reached the age of 20. Harvard hasn't done much for Caroline in teaching her that crap happens in your personal life and you move on. By acting out and getting herself in trouble these days Caroline is doing no damage to her father who has no political aspirations. In fact, the only people she is damaging is herself and her own mother, as people will look to Donna as the parent who raised a spoiled little thief with enough money to pay for $100 worth of cosmetics. She'll be a Harvard grad with a record. A smart thief makes for a lousy resume and no doubt she will still get further than most when she drops her daddy's name during job interviews.

Understandably, Rudy Giuliani has asked the press to not be too harsh, telling them it is a personal family matter.
