LeBron James Backstabs Cavalier Fans and Chooses Miami Heat
If you are a Cleveland Cavaliers fan you have no doubt that LeBron James is nothing more than a backstabber. On the other hand, Miami Heat fans think he is the best thing to happen to them since sliced bread. It was also unexpected for Miami fans. Though Miami was mentioned as a possible, Intrade, the website that accepts bets on such things had that possibility at less than 10 percent. Most (over 70%) expected James would remain with the Cavaliers.
It might not have been the fact that he jumped ship from Cleveland, as in the manner which LeBron James did it. It becomes more of a backstabbing incident when a free agent keep fans waiting for two weeks and sets up a news conference for his own self-serving interests.
Anyone watching the LaBron James news conference was subjected to 45 minutes of a rehashing his basketball skills. The “King” seems to think that, at 25 years old, he is on the same level of Michael Jordan. James wants to wear MJ’s old jersey number when he starts for Miami.
LeBron James has a long way to go before he is a Michael Jordan. He is good, but being called by his self-proclaimed “The King” is a bit of a stretch. What he really wants is a championship ring and more money. He has no loyalty and if his belief that the Miami Heat will produce him a ring doesn’t pan out, he will undoubtedly move on to another team when the time comes and he once again becomes a free agent.
“Winning is a huge thing for me,” James said from a studio in Greenwich, Conn., where an audience of kids from the Boys and Girls Club was present for the announcement.
Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert is obviously pissed off. In an open letter to fans on the Cavs’ website, he never mentions James by name, only referring to his nicknames in quotes and lambasting his former superstar for the way he announced his decision.
“This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his ‘decision’ unlike anything ever ‘witnessed’ in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.
“Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us,” Gilbert said in the letter.
“The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.”
Gilbert, who has owned the Cavs for five years, said James’ decision was a “cowardly betrayal” and called James the “self-titled former ‘King’” and promised the No. 1 pick in the 2003 draft would be “taking the [Cleveland] ‘curse’ with him down south.”
Gilbert went on to say, “I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE. You can take it to the bank.”
While the Miami Heat Fans celebrated LeBron James’ decision, Cav fans were seen burning his jersey and submitting such videos to YouTube, as a declaration of their disgust. Backstabbing fans in sports is nothing new.
Miami fans should celebrate while they can. LeBron James has the ability to repeat his free agent festivities in 4 years.
