Loyalty Is Good But Have A Lifeboat
Alright loyal readers, here is another snippet of Backstabber Survival for you to ingest, learn, master, and then turn loose on your unsuspecting backstabbing co-workers.
“Those most loyal to the king were always buried with him, whether they were dead or not.”
Loyalty is a funny issue. It has its virtues, if used properly, but it comes at a great price. That price usually means that when the ship is going down, you are firmly planted right next to the captain. No new manager, or supervisor, wants a servant of the old regime by their side. They see you as the bad luck that brought the old leader down. You will never again be trusted or considered worthy enough to be a confidant. And when you are not in the inner circle, you are out of the loop.
Your lifeboat? Befriend the boss and his boss. This is not to say you forget your loyalty to your direct boss, but always remember to say hello tho the higher up. Compliment him, tell him how much you enjoy working for the company, etc. Basically, learn to kiss a little ass. You don’t have to have your head up it, but you want him to remember you if the your new direct supervisor submits names for removal and he sees yours on the list, or you wish to see him for a one-on-one if circumstances change for you in the future.
You want a higher ally, if your backstabbing co-workers go to the new boss to beat down your character, or they themselves find you a threat.
So, be careful when it comes to loyalty. Don’t hitch your job to one wagon. Your career depends on it.
