The Boss Backstabber

BackstabbingOccasionally, the backstabber will also be the boss of the person being stabbed.

In the movie “Working Girl,” Sigourney Weaver demonstrated how a boss can use the idea and effort of a subordinate and claim it as their own. Unlike the movie, there is rarely a “truth comes out” ending.

Many who achieved the level of management did so by throwing others under the bus on their way up the ladder. If you could review a movie of their rise you would likely think it a mobster film as you tally the bodies they gunned down and people they stepped on, to get where they are today.

The most encouraging boss imaginable may not hesitate steal a subordinate’s potentially cost-saving suggestion, production-increasing brainstorm, or career-making idea if they feel giving credit to another may jeopardize their position, or chance for further advancement.

A backstabbing boss is difficult to overcome. Until you are ready to take your skills elsewhere, they may survive a very long time. You must remember that they have far more experience in backstabbing and got to their position by knowing and probably using every one of them along the way.

Of course, the worst backstabbing boss is the one who owns the company. He may make promises that you depend on for your financial future and doesn’t hesitate to put the knife in your back, causing you such a financial burden that it may take you years to recover from the losses you incurred.
